Diana contacted me a while ago for an engagement photoshooting in Zurich. She and her soon to be husband Jan are frequent travelers between their two homes in the US and here in Zurich. And that’s exactly the reason why they wanted to have a nice set of photos of them right here in town, before getting married in the US later this year. And I am so happy to have been chosen to take them!
After getting ready here at the studio, we headed right into the town center by tram on a beautiful, sunny day – ready for the many facets of Zurich, the lovely details and delicious sweets!
Enjoy the pictures – I had a lot of fun taking them and really enjoyed spending a wonderful time with this great couple – thank you Diana & Jan!
[English text in light gray below] Ich hatte schon länger die Absicht, mich bei der amerikanischen WPJA anzumelden. WPJA steht für Wedding Photojournalist Association, oder zu Deutsch Hochzeitsfotojournalisten Vereinigung. Und dies steht genau für das, was ich selber so sehr mag: Ungestellte, natürliche Hochzeitsreportagen. Anfangs Jahr meldete ich mich also an und es klappte auf Anhieb. Mehr sogar: Ich solle doch zugleich noch der auf die kunstvolle Hochzeitsfotografie ausgerichteten Schwestervereinigung AGWPJA beitreten – the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Association. Somit bin ich nun also bei beiden dabei.
It was my intention for quite some time, to become a member of the Wedding Photojournalist Association WPJA, as I love natural, unposed wedding photography. You can imagine, that it was quite a bit an excitement, that they did not just accept my application, but also directly suggested to me to become a member of both, the WPJA, as well as the Artistic Guild of the WPJA, AGWPJA.
Both of them have regular internal contests and this gives the opportunity to compete and compare one’s own level with a huge number of members, including some of the world’s best wedding photographers. And in fact, just a week after being accepted as a member, a competition deadline motivated me to participate with a few of my 2009 wedding photos. A great decission, and I’m excited to have made it into the Top20 in the Off-camera flash category:
Die WPJA und die AGWPJA sind inzwischen ziemlich grosse Organisationen und vor allem auch wegen der internen Wettbewerbe interessant. Bei diesen messen sich die vielen Mitglieder gegenseitig und mit dabei sind auch zahlreiche der weltweit besten Hochzeitsfotografen.
Gleich eine Woche nach meiner Aufmahme stand der Einsendeschluss eines solchen Wettbewerbes an. Also sandte ich ein paar Bilder aus dem vergangenen Jahr ein und zu meiner grossen Freude schaffte es eines auch gleich in die Top20, auf Rang 14 der Kategorie für kreatives Blitzen:
Das Bild nahm ich letzten Sommer während einer wunderschönen Hochzeit im Park Hotel Weggis auf. Alle geladenen Männer schenkten der Braut eine schöne, rote Rose. Ihre Freude war riesig und das sieht man dem Bild doch auch ganz gut an:
This photo was taken during a wedding reception in the beautiful Weggis Park Hotel. All invited men brought the bride a nice, red rose, which really thrilled her, and that’s what this photo stands for.
[English version below] Es war die vergangenen Monate auf meinem Blog etwas ruhiger als geplant. Ganz so ruhig zu und her ging’s aber in meinem Leben als Hochzeitsfotograf trotzdem nicht und neben ein einigen Winterthochzeiten – mehr dazu folgt demnächst – traf ich mich mit vielen Paaren. Es kommt eine äusserst spannende Hochzeitssaison!
Nun hier aber erst mal ein kleines Update zu einem anderen Projekt: Einige unter euch wissen es, zusammen mit dem Fotograf und guten Freund Bryon McCartney suchte ich seit einiger Zeit ein Fotostudio in Zürich. Mitte Januar fanden wir dann einen geeigneten Raum. Geeignet ist aber ziemlich untertrieben: Der Raum ist super, eigentlich perfekt und die Freude ist riesig!
Gelegen ist er mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr und dem Auto sehr gut erreichbar in der Nähe des Albisriederplatzes in Zürich. Mit fast vier Meter Höhe und 170m2 bietet er enorm viel Spielraum, sodass wir seit früh im Februar ziemlich viel Zeit mit dem Ausbau des Studios verbringen. Bryon stellte ein kleines Zeitraffer-Video der ersten Ausbauschritte für den Büro-Bereich zusammen:
Yes, I know it was rather quiet on my blog during the past couple of weeks. It’s not that there was nothing happening, the opposite is true: I’ve shot a few winter weddings and met many wonderful couples. 2010 will be a very exciting wedding season, promised!
But first, let me give you a quick update on the other big project: Our Zurich photo stuido. As some of you know, I’ve been searching for a studio in Zurich together with my good friend and fellow photographer Bryon McCartney (check out his great fine-art nude and industrial photography). And in fact, mid January we finally found an amazing room!
The new and upcoming studio is located quite centrally near Zurich’s Albisriederplatz, easy to reach by public transportation and by car. The room is ideal, it’s almost 4 meters high and 170 sqm large. We’ve started with the build out in early February and Bryon assembled the time-lapse video above that shows the construction of our office area.
[english text see below] Donny und Roman traf ich erstmals bei wunderschönen Herbststimmungen in Zürich vor dem Chinagarten. Donny’s Familie stammt aus China. Der Garten war aber nicht unser Ziel, denn dieser hatte bereits Winterpause. Wir genossen die schöne Herbststimmung entlang des Zürichsees und hatten viel Spass beim Paarshooting. Später wechselten wir dann rüber zur urbanen Architektur des Bahnhof Stadelhofen und wärmten uns bei Kaffee und heisser Schockolade wieder etwas auf.
Gleichgeschlechtliche Partnerschaften können in der Schweiz seit Anfang 2007 ‘eingetragen’ oder ‘registriert’ werden – so formel und unromantisch lautet die Bezeichnung von offizieller Seite her. Ein kleiner Wink an die Standesbeamten;-) Die ‘Registrierung’ ist für Donny und Roman aber viel mehr als ein formeller Schritt, das spürt man sofort, ist man mit den beiden zusammen. Ich freue mich sehr auf die morgige Partnerschaftstrauung, an einem Datum, dessen Zahl für die beiden magisch ist…
I met Donny and Roman for the first time in front of Zurich’s Chinese Garden. Donny’s family is Chinese, but we did not intend to visit the garden, as it was already in it’s off-season break. It was the amazing fall foliage we were after, to capture their love and togetherness and we were rewarded with some wonderful colors. Later on, we’ve relocated to the Stadelhofen train station for a change towards more modern and urban surroundings, in which they spend their daily life in. And finally, some coffee and hot chocolate gave back warmth and a few moments to talk over the details of their soon come wedding.
Same sex couples can officiate in Switzerland since the beginning of 2007. It’s a formal act, legally, but far more for Donny and Roman and other couples in love as they are. I’m very exited and looking forward to photograph their wedding, which will take place this Saturday, a magic date for both…

Wann soll man seinen Hochzeitsfotografen buchen? Möglichst frühzeitig natürlich, vor allem wenn man auswählen möchte. Aber was heisst das?
Meine Buchungen für das kommende Jahr sind vor einiger Zeit angelaufen. Zurzeit sind noch viele Termine offen, doch es liegen in allen Monaten der Hauptsaison 2010 erste Buchungen vor. Ich fotografiere pro Freitag oder Samstag maximal je eine Hochzeit ab einer Mindestdauer von 8 Stunden. Die Termine sind somit also limitiert.

Küss mich im Jahr 2010? Das folgende Hochzeitsfoto machte ich im Juni 2009 in Baden, Schweiz. Das Hochzeitspaar sitzt in der Ritschka, die in der oberen, linken Ecke vorbei fährt. Etwas mehr wird man von den beiden hier demnächst sehen. Denn ja, versprochen, ich nehme mir fest vor nun im Herbst, wenn die aktuelle Hochzeitssaison etwas ausklingt, hier einige Hochzeitsreportagen aus dem Jahr 2009 zu zeigen.

The question about when to book your wedding photographer is one I get asked every now and then. As early as possible, especially if you would like to be able to choose. But what exactly does this mean?
Bookings for 2010 have started a while ago. As of October 2009, I do have bookings in every month of the main wedding season 2010. I am taking a max of one booking per Friday and Saturday for a wedding reportage of a minimal duration of 8 hours. Which means dates are limited, but many are still available.
