2009: A Photo Workshop Year
[english below] 2009 wird für mich ein ganz spezielles Fotografie-Workshop-Jahr, sowohl als Teilnehmer, wie auch mit eigenen Workshop-Beiträgen. Ich freue mich riesig, meinen eigenen Horizont zu erweitern und dabei auch meine eigenen Erfahrungen weiter zu geben. Bereits im Februar geht’s mit den ersten Workshops los.
2009 will become a very special photo workshop year for me, as both, a participant and as a teacher: Starting already in February, it will be all about sharing, about expanding my own horizon and giving something of my own experience on to other fellow photographers and photography enthusiasts.
[english below] Für eigene Workshops arbeite ich mit dem ViewFinder Center for Photography in Winterthur zusammen. Das ViewFinder Center ist ein Angebot meiner Freunde Bryon und Kelly, die eine ganze Reihe interessanter Workshops in Englischer Sprache anbieten und diese mit grösster Sorgfalt organisieren. Und dies sind die Workshops, in welchen ich selber mitwirke:
- 7. Februar 2009 in Winterthur:
Digital Darkroom: Introduction to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
Themenschwerpunkte des Workshops sind die Grundlagen dieses weit verbreiteten und sehr leistungsfähigen Programmes, die Bildverwaltung und Bildbearbeitung sowie die Bildaufbereitung für Ausdrucke und das Internet. Zudem werden auch erste weiterführende Aspekte zur Workflow-Optimierung behandelt.

From Passion to Profession als Teil der On Location Workshops.
Dies wird eine einmalige Woche mit drei parallel geführten Workshops. Mit dabei ist auch der Pulitzerpreis-Gewinner Vincent Laforet mit dem Thema Video für Fotografen. Weiter bietet Bryon McCartney einen Workshop in künstlerischer Aktfotografie an.
In der einmaligen Umgebung des Comersees wird die internationale Teilnehmergruppe viel Gelegenheit haben, sich auszutauschen. Zudem profitieren alle Teilnehmer von allen drei Workshop-Leiter, da das Rahmenprogramm auf einem schönen Landgut für alle gemeinsam stattfindet.

Als Teilnehmer besuche ich den Workshop des Blitz-Gurus David Hobby. Der Amerikaner kommt im Februar nach Genf. Mit seinem Blog Strobist, in dem es um die kreative Anwendung kleiner, kompakter Blitzgeräte geht, löste Hobby richtiggehend eine Welle aus, die zu unzähligen Gruppen auf Flickr mit regem Austausch geführt hat.
Ich bin sehr gespannt auf Hobby’s Workshop. Er wird einen schönen Konstrastpunkt zu meiner sonst meist mit weniger Blitzeinsatz auskommenden und viel Wert auf Diskretion legenden Hochzeitsfotografie setzten. Bei Portraits vor Ort verwende ich aber schon ziemlich oft kleine Blitzgeräte anstelle grösserer Studioblitzgeräte.
Etwas später im März steht dann ein grösserer Workshop an: In Windsor bei London bieten die renommierten Hochzeitsfotografen Ben Chrisman, Jason Groupp und das Duo Dave & Quin Cheung eine viertägige Weiterbildung an. Neben dem Einblick in die Arbeitsweise dieser vier Fotografen biete ein solcher Workshop die tolle Möglichkeit sich mit einer internationalen Gruppe von Hochzeitsfotografen auszutauschen. Meine Vorfreude ist dementsprechend riesig, ein spannendes 2009 steht bevor

Most of my own photography workshops are organized in collaboration with the ViewFinder Center for Photography in Winterthur, Switzerland. The ViewFinder Center is a service provided by my friends Bryon and Kelly. They offer a whole collection of interesting workshops in English language and have a wonderful talent in organizing these with great care. These are the workshop I’m myself participating in:
- February 7th, 2009 in Winterthur:
Digital Darkroom: Introduction to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
The workshop will deal with all the basics of this powerful and widely distributed Software. We will cover topics from photo import to final image export, including image management, processing and improving of photos and getting them ready for use in print or online. We will also cover some aspects of workflow optimization and how to get faster with this tool. Further information can be found on the workshops website. - June 14th to 20th, 2009 in Varenna, lake Como, Italy:
From Passion to Profession workshop as part of the On Location Workshops.
This is going to be very exciting and a very unique week with three workshops taking place in parallel. One workshop on video for still photographers, the Viewfinder Masterclass will be taught by Vincent Laforet. And Bryon McCartney will hold a workshop on artistic nude photography.
We will spend the week on an estate high on a hilltop overlooking Lake Como in northern Italy. The international group of participants will profit from all three teachers during the common meals and evening events. It will be a week of learning, mastering new technical skills, sharing experiences and exploring creative expression.

On the other side, as a workshop-participant, there are two events on my schedule. I will visit the seminar by flash-photography master David Hobby. The American photographer will visit Geneva for a seminar this February. With his blog Strobist, dedicated to creative flash photography with compact flashlights, David launched a whole movement that, for example, lead to a whole lot of Flickr-groups with lot’s of know-how sharing and inspiration.
I’m very much looking forward to Davids workshop. It will set a nice contrast to my own otherwise more discrete, less flash-oriented wedding photography. Though I’ve started using more off-camera compact flashlights, instead of the heavy studio-lights, for corporate portraits during the past year.
Then there will be the bigger workshop in Windsor, London, during march: Renowned wedding photographers Ben Chrisman, Jason Groupp and the duo Dave & Quin Cheung will hold a four-day workshop. Beside giving an insight in their approach to wedding photography, these days will be another excellent opportunity for sharing and exchanging with an international crowd of fellow photographers.
